I would just like to watch a romantic comedy that is 1.) romantic and 2.) a comedy.
This is coming out of nowhere, so don’t expect context; every so often I just get really annoyed by how terrible this genre is, and how it doesn’t have to be terrible. Romance = good! Comedy = good! These should be two great tastes that taste great together and yet so often collapse in on each other like…something olive-flavored, because I hate olives.
True, most modern romantic films don’t have the period piece advantage of real societal obstacles that force the would-be lovebirds apart and create the tension necessary to keep the movie from being twenty minutes long, but I still don’t see why the obstacles romcom writers come up with have to be so ridiculous and unrealistic, or worse, why the characters themselves have to be saddled with so many issues (which are never properly resolved), they come across as pathetic idiots (or just plain terrible people—don’t watch Leap Year, anyone. Do not do it. I don’t blame you, Matthew Goode, but I almost do. I almost do) who are too stupid to figure out the simplest facets of their lives.
And TV shows have the opposite problem. There’s plenty of time to develop both the characters and their relationships, so issues are dealt with in a more plausible and satisfying way…and then dragged out excruciatingly for a hundred freaking years. Empires fall and entire generations die out before anyone so much as breathes heavily in their love interest’s direction. I just want something nice to watch when I’m hormonal, man! That’s all I want.
Anyway. This has been another installment of Cater To My Needs, Entertainment Industry.
“I just want something nice to watch when I’m hormonal, man!”
I endorse this message.
