June 2012
::shrugs::
I guess I just need to accept the fact that there is no way to accomplish even half of my to-do list before we go away. Moon time, crazy pants, sore all over from my stupid fall, too many interruptions and obligations, and this oppressive heat are all conspiring to shut my productive ass down.
I’ll be in bed with the fan blowing the air conditioning right out of the vent onto my hormonally...
Blazing ballsacs out there
Chris just got home from work and invited Lila outside to ride their bikes through the sprinkler in the back yard. They’re killing me with the cute.

All of the cramps. Every last one of them.
I’ll just be holding them over here in my uterus, dosing them with ibuprofen every 37 minutes for the next week, in case you’re looking for yours.
Awake and forging into the double to-do list
Three ibuprofen before bed helped guarantee almost unbroken sleep and crazy, wounded dreams. I’m getting the writing tasks from yesterday done now, then heading out to pick up the big power washer at Home Depot to drop off at the market site. Today is a whole bunch of running around dropping Lila and Emma at the Wick Poetry Center Junior Writers program, meeting with the city Finance Officer...
Totally having a second muffin. Maybe scooping out...

Let's see, what else can I bitch half out-loud...
The pain in my hand has migrated to encompass my entire left arm and the bones on my chest that hit the cobblestones first. That’s how flat-chested I am.
I’m really worried about my hand for my farm shift on Thursday morning.
My left leg is also throbbing most unpleasantly, especially the outer part of the thigh muscle, which feels like it kinda sorta maybe got pulled a little...
Aaand the macbook won't recognize the new battery
Mauddammit.
On the bright side
My new battery and charger for the macbook arrived today. In the same delivery was Raw Family Signature Dishes, which I bought in part for the awesome raw bread recipe, because I’m having trouble perfecting my own. I also finally picked up More Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin, which I’ve been meaning to read for years after the first volume blew my food writing socks off.
Still, all...
Maybe I jinxed myself this afternoon, posting about how energetic and productive I felt already.
Now I’m just sore and tired and having to push myself through simple things like breathing.
Needless to say, part II of my to-do list is being jettisoned to tomorrow. I wish I could stop feeling like a loser for it.
So that was mortifying
Lila and I are downtown doing a little shopping. On our way into Acorn Alley I tripped on the sidewalk edge, tried to regain my balance, and did one of those slow-motion falls that ended with me flat on my stomach in front of the barber shop where 7 local dudes witnessed my epic face plant. Pretty sure I yelled “shit fuck” at the top of my lungs. My hand, chest, and elbow are killing...
and it's only quarter past one
So far today I have:
answered a dozen emails
returned three calls
made an epic to-do list
hung out 3 loads of laundry
cleaned out basement freezer in preparation of the quarter local, grass-fed organic steer’s arrival (it will be in cuts, not a side of beef)
figured out that I can make a tomato-corn-chili soup for supper with some of what I took out of the freezer
watered garden
fed...

Good lord, you guys, that beet dish is sublime
Crispy, crunchy, juicy, fresh, flavorful, and it tastes like pure nutrition. This one’s going on the menu.
edit: I served it with one of Baron’s pastured chickens that I brined with lemon, garlic, rosemary, and thyme, then slow roasted on the grill, along with black sushi rice, a green bean and cherry tomato salad, and a big green salad.
Happy Sunday!
Cary just made me cry.
I’m feeling kind of proud of me, too.
And interested in what all of this means to me.
love!
Me too, Kathleen!
It makes me very happy.
Thanks!

Sobriety is the new psychedelic
That’s what my farmer friend, Matt told me about his own journey away from drinking a six pack a night and dropping acid while following the Grateful Dead all over the Northeast Kingdom. He said around the three month mark the fog lifted and he felt everything for the first time in 20 years. The world began to sing for him. That was four years ago, and he says he feels the notes every day...

There was a rabbit inside my garden fence this...
It’s a young one, though big enough that I’m surprised it could fit through the spacing, but I know that’s how it got in because when it saw me, it jumped up about five rows from the ground and squeezed through one of the little rectangles. It had eaten all of my new sunflower sprouts.
What was that rabbit dish with marsala wine and capers that chef back in Yuba City,...

Plant allies and alcoholism, or remembering to...
The gardens are also powerful contributors to my current education. We’ve found such an easy flow together, and I think it’s because this spring I let myself off the hook. No need to be so formal with the nature spirits. Just talk to them and listen. No need to make a rigid map. Just show up with seeds and plants, and get into the flow. Plant. So instead of a grid, the garden this year is...

Writerly things
I ordered a new battery and charger for my ancient 13” macbook this morning - the little workhorse is six years old. It finally dawned on me that part of the reason I’m getting so little writing done is because I don’t work well at this horrible desk situation in the living room stairwell corner. In the past I’ve taken my laptop out in the shade, or up to my room, or to the...
How is it possible that this not drinking thing is...
I’m going to venture a wild guess here and say maybe it’s because I’m freaking out by eating all of the food. All of the unhealthy, carbo-loaded, sugary food, to recreate the sugar dump that alcohol creates inside my body.
My goal with this 30 Day Booze Snooze is to clean out my system, and hopefully re-set to a periodic drinking thing, instead of drinking every day like I had...

“I’d been the one telling young women at my lectures that you can have it all and do it all, regardless of what field you are in. Which means I’d been part, albeit unwittingly, of making millions of women feel that they are to blame if they cannot manage to rise up the ladder as fast as men and also have a family and an active home life (and be thin and beautiful to boot).”

TT - jobs and money edition
Today I go in to Tikes to train my replacement. I was told just two days after the floor fell out of the cafe deal that my replacement had finally been approved by the Grand Poobah and Wizard in the West after three months of consideration.
I had to sit on my hands a few times so I wouldn’t call and beg them to let me stay. Every time I got through the anxiety piece, I then sat in the...
